I do a large amount of concert photography, often for the local alternative weekly, for bands, record labels, etc. I've been a film-using hold-out, I love my F5 and Fujipress.

So last night, I shot a show at a mid-sized venue for fun (and maybe after-sale profit) but not on assignment so I could take some risks. Just took the D70s and some wide prime lenses - no flash allowed. It's the kind of venue that you can JUST ABOUT get away without flash - if I was shooting film it would be at ISO 1600, wide open primes at f1.4/1.8 and bracing carefully to hand-hold at 1/60s.

Using the same techniques with the digital, the results were horrible. I did get some usable (and sellable) shots, but anything involving red stage lights were totally washed out and unfixable.

Any suggestions?

Herb Greene
Close Encounters with The Dead

December 2, 2005 - January 14, 2006

Herb Greene began his photographic career as a department store
staff photographer while living in San Francisco in the mid 1960s.
His love of folk music led him to photograph and become part of the
subculture which was taking root in the Haight-Ashbury area - the
San Francisco Sound. It was at this time that his path crossed with
The Grateful Dead and a 30+ year relationship began.

Greene is considered the official photographer for The Grateful
Dead. The music of the 60's became the foundation for political
revelation and activism, a sexual revolution, a drug enhanced
transformation, the much touted "generation gap" and the Summer of
Love. Greene's iconic imagery is the definitive Rock & Roll album
not only of the bands and fans but of those individuals who would
become a part of the movement. They also revealed the underside of
the life of the street kids who came to Haight-Ashbury.

Greene's work has been shown in numerous exhibits and publications
throughout the United States. It has been featured in "Rolling
Stone" and "Newsweek" and three of Greene's own books. This exhibit,
Brief Encounters with The Dead, will show for the first time, his
portfolio of large exquisite platinum prints (13x13 Rock Solid) of
Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Carlos Santana, Led Zeppelin, Rod
Stewart, Jefferson Airplane, The Dead, and, of course, Jerry Garcia.
This body of work celebrates Greene's extraordinary relationship and
access.

Most significant to Greene are his memories of his friend: "I loved
Jerry Garcia. His humility was amazing. He is a shining symbol of
freedom."

The gallery is open and free to the public -- there is no charge to
enjoy the work!

I finally got a digital camera not too long ago just for this reason. There are too many good moments at shows to remember so that's what a camera is amazing for. Don't be lazy and show me and others what you experienced! I posted a couple pics from a show on April 6 of this year with Throwdown, All That Remains, and others. They're not the greatest pics seeing as I'm still learning how to use the damn thing, but meh... I will post more as I go to more shows. I bet someone has better pics than mine. . .

A recent rant from my LiveJournal...

I'm a working music photog. Most of the time I have a camera at a show, it's because someone is paying me to be there. Not that there's anything wrong with people taking photos for themselves, it's how I learnt to do it, but they have to learn QUICKLY not to piss off the audience.

If you have to be up front and center, shoot on your knees so people can see over you.

Learn to shoot from the sides. You get better photographs if you don't have a microphone in front of the person you are shooting, and you are not in front of the audience.

If you have to move, either do it between songs or run or crouch. you are not part of the show.

Shoot fast and get the hell out of the way. Big shows only allow pro photographers three songs. But it's a good working practice regardless of restrictions. Musicians look better before they get sweaty. And you don't piss off the audience.

And if you have a bloody digital camera, don't don't don't take a shot, and then stand in the middle of the stage during a song and check to see how it turned out. Disrespectful of the band, disrespectful of the audience.

It was shame though that we had to stand like 60 metres away from the stage. So I went out to rent myself a longer lens and the one I wanted wasn't available. So I ended up with a 300mm and a 1.4 converter that didn't have autofocus.

But I am actually kind of satisfied with the result.
Let me know what you think:

whoa, this past Sunday I had the great honor to photograph a classic band, one that started a genre of its own, making them responsible for 60% of the music I listen too today; not to mention the majority of shows I frequent. I managed to get a photo/press pass for this 3000 cap gig, being the only photographer there in a show where no cameras were allowed.

Reason this is a big deal to me is, not only the subject matter, but I don't usually care for these size of shows, and I've never had that kind of access. Pretty cool.

The negative of this was my "good" camera was broken and I had to go out there with a little Nikon Coolpix. Not very professional and pretty slow. Overall, I came out with a good number of successful shots.

If you haven’t heard of or seen Skinny Puppy before, they have reunited and are on tour, catch them for a chance to see one of the greatest influential acts of the last two/three decades and not to mention a great and exciting stage show!
Hi all,

I love shooting concerts and have been doing it for years, mostly in smaller venues. Labor Day weekend I got my first chance to have a photo pass for a big venue -- Memorial Stadium at Seattle's Bumbershoot festival. What a thrill; photographers with access were allowed the first three songs in the pit and I shot as fast as I could :) My prizes from the weekend were Public Enemy and the Pixies, which I am pleased with despite my limited equipment and experience with big shows:

http://piratefactory.com/photos/PublicEnemy/
http://piratefactory.com/photos/Pixies/

Of course there are some "up the nose" shots as the stage was almost as tall as me :)
